South Florida Folk Festival Canceled for 2006

The South Florida Folk Festival has been forced to cancel the 2006 festival scheduled for January 14th and 15th of next year.

Due to the effects of Hurricane Wilma, which hit South Florida at the end of October, it is with deep regret that the South Florida Folk Festival Board of Directors must formally announce the cancellation of the 2006 Festival. This decision was necessary because the park which normally accommodates the Festival was not only badly damaged by the storm, but it has also been deemed an emergency residential housing area by the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA), thus causing us to seek alternative venues on extremely short notice. After three weeks of contacting and visiting other potential parks and venues, we were unable to find a suitable alternative location for the Festival that would enable us to ensure a high-quality event for our performers and audience, while also not posing a financial risk to the 2007 Festival.

The National Singer/Songwriter Competition will go on without the usual live appearance at the festival and winners will be invited to appear at the 2007 festival as usual along with the winners of the 2005 contest.

The full press release with all the details is currently posted on the front page of the festival’s web site.
