On a very sad note here indeed we note the passing of Margaret MacArthur-singer of songs and collector of songs and instrumentalist, a woman who was in many ways more than the beginning of much of both the renewal and the continuity of traditional music in this part of the country. We will miss this bright presence at festivals. Vermont and all the Northeast mourns, but Margaret MacArthur’s legacy lives with us for always.

It was with great sadness that I just learned of Margaret’s passing. The music world is greatly diminished with this loss. Not only was she a musician extraordinaire, she was a wonderful
person. She was a good friend of my mother, Barbara Smith, and often visited her when in
Arizona. Her friendship was very important to Mom and Margaret was wonderfully consoling
when my mother passed away. She sang at the memorial service, including a song with my son and grandaughter. This is a treasured memory for me. What a legacy she lives behind in so
many ways.
