Garnet Rogers Wins Eighth Annual Best of Bound for Glory Award

Garnet Rogers has been selected the by fans of WVBR’s Bound for Glory radio show as the best act of the show’s 39th season which concluded this summer. Show host and founder Phil Shapiro announced the award on the October 15th live show.

Previous winners of the award, voted every year by the ‘ Friends of Bound for Glory’ include Le Vent Du Nord, Tanglefoot, Y*ALL, Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, Mustard’s Retreat, Chris Smither, and Small Potatoes.

The Friends of Bound for Glory have truly honored a gem this year. Garnet Rogers’ vocal and instrumental talents are complimented by an undeniably powerful physical presence. He’s close to six and a half feet tall, and with the lungs to match. His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail, Rogers writes poetic songs written from diverse view-points about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small everyday victories. His over-the-top humor and lightning-quick wit move his audiences from tears to laughter and back again.

Reached on the road by host Phil Shapiro. Garnet responded by saying, “Oh wow! That’s great, thank you.” Then after a pause, with a smile in his voice he added, “I’d like to thank the academy….”

Shapiro told Rogers that he was in very good company, with three of the eight Best of Bound for Glory winners coming from Canada. Tanglefoot took the prize in 2001 and last year’s winners were the French Canadian group Le Vent du Nord. In quick reflection Rogers replied, “It’s just a matter of being bigger and louder.” Then Garnet turned almost sentimental, “I’m really touched, that’s lovely. I will come back, I love it.”

Currently in it’s 40th year Bound for Glory presents thirty three folk music concerts a year before an enthusiastic audience. The show airs live with three half hour concert sets interspersed with half hour breaks of recorded folk music.

Bound for Glory’s 40th year continues on October 22nd with old time music greats Ginny Hawker and Tracy Schwarz. Upcoming shows include Zoe Mulford October 29, Sadie Green Sales Ragtime Jugband on November 5, Roy Book Binder November 12, and the return of Tanglefoot on November 19. The final live show of the season is December 3 with bluesman Little Toby Walker.
