Hootenanny TV Series Boxed Set
Shout Factory has released a three DVD boxed set of performances from ABC-TV’s 1963-64 Hootenanny TV series.
The show was and is controversial. ABC refused to invite Pete Seeger because he had been blacklisted and a number of performers boycotted the show because of that. Later there has been a perception the the show only included second rate performers and wasn’t ‘real folk’.
Ron Olesko did an extensive review which covers the complicated history of the show, and finds that there some real gems amongst the performances included in the set.
