George W. Told The Nation
Tom Paxton has updated his Vietnam era ‘Lyndon Johnson Told The Nation’ and posted it on his web site as one of his ’short shelf life’ songs.
I got a letter from old George W., It said, “Son, I hate to trouble ya, But this war of mine is going bad. It’s time for me to roll the dice; I know you’ve already been there twice, But I am sending you back to Baghdad.”

If you like vintage Paxton, this is Paxton at his vintage best. Insightful, thought-provoking, and clever with lyrics. If you remember “Lyndon Johnson Told The Nation” with fondness, this will bring a smile to your face. If you think, however that the President is always right, shouldn’t be criticized, or that the war should be supported blindly and/or without question, well….., this song won’t change your mind, won’t bring a smile to your face, or make a Paxton fan out of you. You should, instead, go to Paxton’s website, www.tompaxton.com and go to his short songs, his downloads, and listen to John Ashcroft. You’ll change your thinking, and this song will gain more relevance. As Pete Seeger used to say, a generation of people grew up singing Tom Paxton songs thinking they were traditional songs from generations back; by now, I guess they are. And most have aged well in memory, at campfires, and on long bus rides. Tom Paxton IS an American standard. Dungarees@gmail.com
