4 Comments New Videos From Patrick Costello

Article written by Ken on Sunday, Mar 18, 2007 in On The Web,Publications

How and Tao of Old Time BanjoA while back, actually quite a while back. I posted about Patrick Costello’s Creative Commons licensed banjo and guitar instruction books.

You can buy Patrick’s books but he also makes them freely available on his web site. He does this in part because he feels it’s the right thing to do. Everything he knows was taught to him freely by other musicians but it works for him commercially as well. The downloaded books have become his best advertisement and they generate more sales than he got before he started giving them away.

Patrick wrote recently to let me know that he’s still at it. He’s added two instruction videos, one for banjo and one for guitar. Like his books they’re licensed under creative commons and can be downloaded for free.

You can find the complete folk guitar video at…
http://www.archive.org/details.php?identifier=folk.guitar

The frailing banjo video is at.. http://www.archive.org/details.php?identifier=frailing.banjo

All four of the guitar lessons and some of the banjo lessons have also been uploaded to YouTube.

Patrick’s web site is howandtao.com

Patrick does good work. It is very generous of him to provide his work free of charge. Check him out on u-tube for other clawhammer help. It’s good stuff.

Hi Patrick, Your book help me so much in finding the creative route. Thank you so much,James

Hi Patrick,

I just had a computer melt down so I am not sure if the e-mail I nearly finished got sent to you. I just want to know how to keep up with your instructions on Banjo Frailing. I will subscribe to the Backporch News.

Thanks again for your sharing.

Henry,
Looks like Patrick's website location has changed. Check out his YouTube site and his blog for more current information. His videos are still on the archive.org site originally listed above. Thanks for reading!
