One of several World of Music, Arts & Dance (WOMAD) festivals held in various countries each year, the WOMADelaide Festival has been taking place March 6-8 in Adelaide, Australia. Over 20 countries were represented by 37 groups on six outdoor stages. The response to the festival has been so enthusiastic that next year’s festival will add a fourth day as a test.
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, an indigenous folk musician, was one of the star performers. Blind from birth, this singer has been bringing audiences to tears with his stunningly beautiful voice and simple, soulful music. The day the festival began, in a separate artistic event, painter Guy Maestri was awarded the Archibald Prize for his portrait of the musician.
WOMAD New Zealand takes place next weekend, March 13-15, in Taranaki.
