After trying out more than one new host and checking out several email update distribution methods, The Back Porch News is finally settled into its new home and has a new email update system. More information on the new system can be found here. If you are already a subscriber to our daily or weekly email digests, please let me know through the contact form if you have any trouble with the new system. If you see this site and have missed some updates, try adding our domain name to your “safe senders” list.
Everyone who is already a subscriber has been defaulted to an HTML format preference. The email updates will not normally include graphics, since they are based on the RSS feed, but if your email provider will not accept HTML format you can update your profile to choose plain-text format instead. You can also, if you wish, choose the mobile format for easier reading on your cell phone.Read More Add a Comment
Over the next several days, Ken and I will be taking the final steps to transfer The Back Porch News website from him to me, including a change in hosting location. Please be patient if you run into any difficulties using the site. Hopefully that won’t happen and the transfer will be invisible to you. Thanks in advance for your understanding.Read More Add a Comment
Music has always been an essential part of my life. I listen to folk, rock, classic country, old-style gospel and a little blues, Native American and Celtic — basically, American roots music. My folk music interests include everything from Gordon Lightfoot and Joan Baez to Ollabelle and the BeGoodTanyas. Plus a tiny bit of world folk music as I find it, such as The Epiphany Project or Otavalomanta.
Listening to music and, from time to time, working on my own music helps me maintain sanity and balance in the midst of a corporate environment. My long-term goal is to be a full-time writer and musician; acquiring the Back Porch News is one way of writing more often and of becoming more involved in the folk music community.
Please let me know what types of folk music news you would like to read on this site, and by all means contribute news from your part of the world.

I’m really excited to announce that after more than a year of silence the Back Porch News has a new owner!!
Sharon Lundsford is taking over editorial duties at the “news” as of today and over the next couple of months the site and email list will be moved to her web hosting account. Sharon is a fan of the kinds of music covered here, has lots of ideas for moving the site forward and is looking forward to getting more involved with the folk music community. Please make her welcome.
Thanks to all of you for reading over the last few years and especially thanks to all of you who’ve been patiently waiting for something to happen while I was trying to find someone to take over. I’ll see you around, at a festival or concert somewhere. Keep picking and singing.

Update: The site now has a new owner. After much thought I’ve decided to put The Back Porch News up for sale. My time and energy are going into new projects and as much as I keep thinking I’ll get back to ‘The News’ it just hasn’t happened. I’ve put a lot of time and effort into the site over the last four years and I’d really like to see it continue.
If you are looking for fame and fortune traditional music probably isn’t the best subject to write about but as weblogs go Back Porch News is modestly successful. It has about 172 subscribers and and gets about 1900 page views a month. It makes a tiny amount of advertising revenue. It could bring in more if properly handled but we are talking about folk music.
However if you love folk music and want to share that love with other people AND you want to help the community grow and prosper this could be your chance.
The price depends, frankly on who you are and what you want to do with the site. For a strictly commercial sale I’d be looking for about $2,500. For someone with the right plans for the site it could be considerably less. If you think you might be interested use the contact form to get in touch with me.Read More Add a Comment
As you will have noted I’ve been back posting regularly after a pretty slow summer. Well actually life was pretty busy which was why posting was slow. Musically it included a trip to the Oldsongs Festival, a couple of days at Ithaca’s own Grassroots Festival, a week of dancing at Pinewoods and the fabulous Turtle Hill Festival just after labor day weekend. In a few weeks I might run into some of you at North East Regional Folk Alliance Conference.(more…) Read More Add a Comment
