Wainwright and Earle Take Folk Album Awards at Grammys

In Sunday night’s Grammy Awards ceremony, Loudon Wainwright III was awarded Best Traditional Folk Album for High Wide & Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project, and Steve Earle took home the Best Contemporary Folk Album title for Townes, an album of songs written by Townes Van Zandt. Steve Martin’s The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo, mentioned in an earlier post, was named Best Bluegrass Album. Electric Dirt, recorded by Levon Helm, earned the Best Americana Album award, beating out Willie Nelson & Asleep at the Wheel, Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams and Wilco.

Steve Martin to Play Grand Ole Opry

We posted in February about Steve Martin’s release of an album of banjo music. Billboard magazine reported Wednesday that Martin has been invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee on May 30. Album producer Jon McEuen (of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band fame) will also take the stage, as will several other country musicians.

Bluegrass Album from Steve Martin

Steve Martin —  yes, funny guy Steve Martin — released a CD of original banjo music earlier this month. The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo also features vocals by Dolly Parton and Vince Gill. has exclusive distribution of both CD and download until April 26. Steve, who took up the banjo early in his comedy career, plays in clawhammer style.
